RELIGIOUS BASED POPULATION IN INDIA

Religion plays a significant role in India, and it is characterized by diversity. Here are some statistics and facts regarding religion in India.



        Hindu Population in India 

According to the 2011 census, 1.21 billion people are living in the world, out of which 966 million (79.80%) identify themselves as Hindus. As of 2024, about 1.1 billion people in India practice Hinduism. In India, the majority of the population identifies as Hindu. Almost 94% of all Hindus in the world are found in India. Nepal is the only other country with a majority of Hindus. With the exception of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Jammu & Kashmir, and Punjab, most Hindus reside in 29 states and union territories.

        Muslim population in India 

India has a significant Muslim population, with 172 million individuals (14.23% of the population) identifying as Muslims according to the 2011 census. By 2024, it is estimated that the number of Muslims in India will reach 220 million. This will make India home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the world, except for Indonesia. 

The majority of Muslims in Jammu & Kashmir and Lakshadweep are devout followers of Islam, while Assam (34.22%), West Bengal (27.01%), Kerala (26.56%), Uttar Pradesh (19.26%), and Bihar (16.87%) also have sizable Muslim populations. 

        Christian Population in India

According to the 2011 census, roughly 2.3% of the global population, or just over 27.8 million people, identify as Christians. In India, approximately 3.22 crore individuals are Christians as of 2024. The states of Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland in the north-east of India have a higher number of Christians compared to other religions. 

Additionally, the states of Arunachal Pradesh (30.26%), Kerala (18.38%), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (21.28%), Manipur (41.29%), and Goa (25.10%) have a higher percentage of Christians than the overall population of their respective states or union territories.

        Sikh Population in India 

According to the 2011 census, there are a little over 20.8 million people, which makes up 1.72% of the total population of 1.21 billion, who follow Sikhism. The states and unions with significant Sikh populations include Punjab (57%), Chandigarh (13.11%), Haryana (4.91%), Delhi (3.40%), Uttarakhand (2.34%), and Jammu & Kashmir (1.87%). It is estimated that by 2024, almost 2.4 crore people in India will be practicing Sikhism.

        Buddhists Population in India

According to the 2011 census, 0.70% of the Indian population identified themselves as Buddhists, which amounts to 8.5 million individuals. The states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and the northeastern region have significant Buddhist communities. As of 2024, the number of individuals practicing Buddhism in India is expected to reach 10 million, or one crore.

        Jain Population in India 

According to the 2011 census, out of a total of 1.21 billion people in India, 4.5 million or 45 lakhs identified themselves as followers of Jainism. This means that Jains accounted for 0.37% of India's total population in 2011. Jainism is significant in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. As of 2024, around 52 lakh people are practicing Jainism in India.

Muslims or followers of Islam accounted for 172 million people, while Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains accounted for 27.8 million, 20.8 million, 8.5 million, and 4.5 million respectively. In addition to these six major religions, more than 8 million people declared their adherence to other faiths and religions, including tribal faiths. The total population of the world at that time was 1.21 billion people.
